The Sadist
The Sadist (1963) is a tense psychological horror-thriller directed by James Landis and starring Arch Hall Jr. as Charlie Tibbs. When three schoolteachers experience car trouble while traveling to a baseball game, they stop at an isolated junkyard hoping to find help. Instead, they encounter Charlie, a violent and unpredictable young killer, and his equally disturbed girlfriend, Judy.
Trapped with nowhere to run and little chance of outside help, the teachers are forced into a terrifying struggle for survival as Charlie toys with them and grows increasingly dangerous. Inspired in part by the real-life crimes of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, The Sadist delivers a grim, suspenseful story of violence, fear, and desperation.
Shot in stark black-and-white, the film has developed a cult following and is remembered for its unsettling atmosphere, intense performances, and striking cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond.
